Guardamar del Segura is a coastal town in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, Spain. Located on the southeast coast of the province, it is part of the region of La Vega Baja del Segura, and sits at the mouth of the Segura River. It is also known for its pine forest, planted to stop the advance of the coastal mobile dunes, which until that time invaded the surrounding cultivation fields. Traditionally a fishing and farming community, today, Guardamar is a popular holiday destination thanks to its 11 kilometers of coastline and beaches. Guardamar has several beautiful parks to enjoy: in the town center there is the Reina Sofía Park with peacocks, aquatic fauna ponds, and large play areas for children, all this under the shadow of the centenary pines populated in squirrels, one of the symbols of this park. Even more impressive is the Alfonso XIII Park, a forest space of 800 hectares of pines, palm trees, cypresses, and eucalyptus planted in the late nineteenth century to protect the town from the encroaching dunes. The area is known for the cultivation of the ñora pepper as well as melon, lemon, and orange. The population of Guardamar is nearly 16,000 and foreigners make up about 40% of the population.
